When people think of the high Arctic the first things they think about are glaciers and icebergs. OK, and maybe polar bears. Glaciers calving icebergs is a normal part of life in the Arctic. It is a spectacular sight accompanied by a deep, thunderous sound you can feel in your bones. It is an awe inspiring spectacle. Once “born” icebergs have a short life span of at most three years before they are dissolved into the sea. They seem like living creatures, giant animals of ice who move and breathe and sing. They are contain air from ancient history, and can be every shade of blue and sometimes orange as well. It has been a remarkable privilege to spend time among these giants in both Greenland and Svalbard.
