Life above the Arctic Circle is both the same and very different from life elsewhere. People wear jeans and sweatshirts. And also sealskin and in winter, snowmobile suits that look like they were designed for astronauts. People drive cars, and snowmobiles. Above the Arctic Circle climate change is an unquestioned fact of life. Will there be enough ice to drive on? Will many reindeer die of starvation this winter? Will polar bears come into town looking for food? At the same time, coffee is drunk and jokes are told and life goes on as if it will always be this way. These images are from Svalbard and Greenland.
